Green Tomato Chutney
There are many recipes for green tomato chutney available and our family recipe is spiced with mixed spice and the fruity element is added by sultanas; a lovely chutney to have with a ploughman’s lunch.
Chutney originates from India and is made from combining fruit or vegetable with spices, an acid and a sweetener. Rather than sugar, the main preservative in chutneys is vinegar. All of our chutneys take several hours to cook and should be allowed to mature for at least six weeks before eating to allow the flavours to blend and mellow, producing the characteristic rich fruity flavour. We use granulated or soft brown cane sugar in all of our chutneys and do not add any artificial flavours, preservatives or sweeteners.
Our chutneys have a best before date one year from the date of production and will be fine kept in a cupboard, larder or other cool, dark, dry place for many months; once opened they should be refrigerated and used within 3-4 weeks.
