Blackcurrant jam is great spread on toast or with scones and cream, but also makes a lovely accompaniment to cheese. It can also be added to youghurt or poured onto ice-cream for a lovely fruity hit.

A beautifully coloured jam with an attractive gloss…. Lovely jewel-like colour and homemade appearance. The aroma is delightful, and conveys clear blackcurrant notes. There are good sized fruit pieces, and plenty of them. The flavour of this jam is great: a brilliant balance of tartness and sweetness. The skins of the currants are tender. Just right.  Good even consistency without too much wateriness – the shape of the fruit has held up well. An excellent, pure blackcurrant taste…  A simple and versatile jam…  Pleasingly tart and not too sweet.

Description

Blackcurrants grow well throughout the northern hemisphere and used to grow wild in the UK. They are full of vitamin C and make a firm set jam that is full of flavour. We use only British grown blackcurrants to make our blackcurrant extra jam so we can reduce food miles. Spread this jam on toast or enjoy it with scones and cream, on the other hand blackcurrant jam also makes a lovely accompaniment to cheese. It can also be added to yoghurt or poured onto ice-cream for a lovely fruity hit.

Where do we source the fruit for our blackcurrant jam?

We make our jam with blackcurrants from three local fruit farms because it is important to us that we support British growers. So we buy most of the fruit we use from Secretts of Milford, only a 30 minute drive away, Maynards and Tibbs Farm in Sussex, our neighbouring county. The blackcurrants are picked when they are in season in July, because the flavour and nutritional value is at its best, to make our blackcurrant extra jam. We have to get in quick though, because otherwise they will all be sold to make a well-known blackcurrant squash! If we run out, however, we also use quick frozen blackcurrants from Windmill Hill Farm later in the year and so all of our blackcurrant jam is “home grown”.

All natural ingredients

All of our jams are extra jams so contain more fruit in than typical supermarket brands. Firstly, an extra jam has to have a minimum of 45g fruit per 100g product and secondly it must be made from whole fruit. We make our jams when the fruit is in season and at its best and we use hand-picked, locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. We use British granulated sugar in all of our jams and do not add any artificial flavours, preservatives or sweeteners so our blackcurrant jam is made with 100% natural ingredients.

Our jams have a best before date one year from the date of production. In other words, keep them in a cupboard, larder or other cool, dark, dry place for many months. However, once opened they should be refrigerated and used within 3-4 weeks.
